Is Your Website Convenient on a Phone? A 5-Minute Self-Check

People who come to your site from an Instagram or Facebook ad almost always open it on their phone. On top of that, Google primarily uses the mobile version of a site for indexing and ranking (this is called mobile-first indexing). So if a site is awkward on a phone, you lose both clients and positions in search.
The good news is that you do not need a developer to find out. Take your phone and go through the eight checks below.
1. Text is readable without zooming
How to check: open your site on your own phone and read the first screen without pinching to zoom.
What good looks like: the text is comfortable to read, and the main offer and the contact button are visible right on the first screen.
2. No horizontal scrolling
How to check: try to drag the page left and right with your finger, and scroll through the whole page.
What good looks like: the page stays in place, nothing is cut off at the edges, and no block sticks out of the screen.
3. Buttons and links are easy to tap
How to check: use only one hand and tap buttons, menu items and links with your thumb.
What good looks like: buttons are large enough, there is space between them, and you do not hit the neighbouring link by accident.
4. The phone number is clickable and there is a quick way to message
How to check: tap the phone number on the site.
What good looks like: the dialer opens with the number already filled in. Next to it there is a fast way to write — WhatsApp or Instagram Direct — because many people prefer a message to a call.
5. Forms are short and open the right keyboard
How to check: fill in your own contact form on the phone.
What good looks like: two or three fields at most, and a numeric keyboard appears for the phone number field. If you have to switch keyboards or scroll a lot, some people will give up.
6. Images are not cropped or too heavy
How to check: look at every image on the phone and notice how fast they appear.
What good looks like: the important part of the picture (a face, a product, a text on a banner) is not cut off, and images do not load for a long time on mobile internet.
7. Speed
How to check: enter your site address in Google PageSpeed Insights — a free Google tool — and look at the results for the mobile version. Note that Google's old "Mobile-Friendly Test" tool has been retired, so PageSpeed Insights (which is built on Lighthouse) is the way to check this now.
What good looks like: the page opens quickly and the tool does not point to serious problems with images, scripts or layout. We described the most common causes in the article about technical errors that reduce website effectiveness.
8. The menu works and pop-ups do not get in the way
How to check: open the menu, switch between sections, and wait for any pop-ups or banners to appear.
What good looks like: the menu opens and closes easily, and pop-ups (cookie notices, discounts, chats) do not cover the whole screen and always have a visible close button.
What if the site does not pass
Small problems — a tiny button, a heavy image, a long form — can usually be fixed quickly. But if the site was built without a mobile version at all, patching it often costs more effort than building it again properly, and rebuilding is often the cheaper option. Every AXION website is fully responsive: it adapts to phones, tablets and screens of different sizes. A one-page website starts from 40,000 AMD, and you can see the details on the pricing page.
A weak mobile version is also one of the common reasons a site brings no requests. All the others are collected in the article "7 reasons your website brings no leads".
Conclusion
Five minutes with your own phone will show you what your clients see every day. If you find problems, do not put it off: every awkward screen is a lost request. Send us a link to your site and we will check it for free and tell you what is worth fixing.
